Back to the case Rules refresher
About this case
The breeding programme at Larchmont Zoo produced six hyacinth macaw eggs this spring, the rarest clutch in Europe. The records say all six were infertile and destroyed. A private collector abroad says otherwise — and has six bright blue chicks to prove it.
This Hard case seats 20 suspects on a 4×5 grid. 16 of them carry a clue; the other 4 only have something to say about themselves. 4 of the steps can only be proven by reading two or more clues together.
Nudge 1 — where to start
The case opens with Mila the face painter (A4) already proven. Their statement is enough on its own to prove one more suspect straight away — read it word by word, especially the counting words (exactly, neighbors, between).
The only face painter in Row 3 is innocent.— Mila, face painter (A4)
Spoiler: who can I prove first?
Kira (C3) is innocent, proven by Mila’s statement.
Nudge 2 — the opening
Five suspects get proven in this stretch, in columns C and D. The statements doing the work are role counts, if–then clues and “between” clues. Every step in this stretch needs just one statement. Tip: with role counts, roles count everyone in the role wherever they stand, so check the whole board.
Spoiler: whose statement to read
Mila’s statement.
Spoiler: which suspect does that settle?
Kira (C3) — innocent.
Nudge 3 — after about 5 proven suspects
Five suspects get proven in this stretch, all over the board. The statements doing the work are neighbor counts, direction clues and row and column counts. 2 steps here need 2 statements read together. Tip: with neighbor counts, treat the number as a budget — once enough of the ring is proven, the rest is forced.
Spoiler: whose statements to read
Cal’s and Greta’s statements, read together.
Spoiler: which suspect does that settle?
Jasper (B3) — innocent.
Nudge 4 — after about 10 proven suspects
Four suspects get proven in this stretch, in columns A and B. The statements doing the work are neighbor counts, row and column counts and shared-neighbor counts. 2 steps here need 4 statements read together. Tip: with row and column counts, once the line’s quota is filled, everyone else in it takes the other verdict.
Spoiler: whose statements to read
Cal’s, Tariq’s, Nico’s and Raj’s statements, read together.
Spoiler: which suspect does that settle?
Basil (B1) — a criminal.
Nudge 5 — the endgame
Five suspects get proven in this stretch, in columns A and C. The statements doing the work are odd/even clues, shared-neighbor counts and row and column counts. Every step in this stretch needs just one statement. Tip: with odd/even clues, zero is even, and with one unknown left the parity settles it.
Spoiler: whose statement to read
Nico’s statement.
Spoiler: which suspect does that settle?
Esme (A2) — a criminal.
The hardest step
The toughest moment needs 4 statements at once. If you’re stuck in the middle of the case, this is probably it.
Spoiler: the statements for the hardest step
Read Cal’s, Tariq’s, Nico’s and Raj’s statements together. They settle Basil.
